Group Preliminary Task: Clip analysis
Our chosen clip for our preliminary project comes from the 2016 horror film 'Hush' (the scene we will be recreating starts at 17:50 and stops at 20:20). This movie is about the home invasion of a young woman who is deaf and mute, following her as she tries to escape the wrath of a masked killer.
This long shot of Maddie opening her laptop lays audiences' fears to rest as she her facial expressions indicate that she instantly feels more content whilst working. The mise-en-scene of the heavily stocked bookshelf in the back is important in constructing Maddie's character as there is less script delivery than the average horror (due to Maddie's hearing impairment and inability to speak) so the audience have to piece together whatever parts of her home, personality, and lifestyle are shown to come to their own conclusions. Here the novels in the background and the next shot of her continuing to write her latest story let audiences know she is a writer, whilst the non-dietetic sounds of crickets show she resides in the forest as she enjoys the peace and solitary it offers.
The combination of technical elements are instinct to understanding Maddie's character from the offset as the camera treatment is intrusive; tracking shots help the audience feel like they are there with her as she struggles to locate her cat, whilst the mise-en-scene of her secluded home indicate she lives a simple life. This alongside the bleak lighting to indicate that it is the night time, the lack of other characters in the creepy setting of the woods, and absence of any dialogue as she physically cannot speak all contribute to presenting this as an even more terrifying ordeal as audiences are probed to feel sympathetic towards her due to her vulnerability.
The creepiness occurs when Maddie receives a picture message from her own iPhone, revealing images of her inside of her home. The silhouettes of her doors, blinds, window frames signify to that the anonymous sender is outside of her house and the frequency of which the messages are being sent alert audiences with a sense of urgency as it is happening in real time.

The ambient music creates a tension-filled atmosphere as this is the moment Maddie discovers she is being watched and targeted. The camera treatment is significant here as close-ups allow audiences to gauge her emotions based off of her facial expressions. The fact that audiences must watch this revelation being played out by Maddie's look of intense fear builds the suspense as we see the transition of her calm on her laptop to instantly anxious. The small glimpse of the laptop shown is still extremely important as it is the object bringing the two characters together.
This first interaction between the two characters shows the power dynamics as Maddie is trapped inside her home with the attacker surrounding her; the fact that he has her phone is also a major part of the plot as she could have used it to alert emergency services. As she lives in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors in close proximity, him possessing her phone suggests to audiences she is well and truly alone. The door being wide open is also used to conjure fear among audiences as they are both the same distance away from it, so they can anticipate that it will be a race to see who triumphs first.
This mid-shot shows Maddie's facial expression immediately after realizing she is in danger. The mise-en-scene of the green jacket is important as it shows the progression over time from when she was searching for her cat, which is precisely why she left her door open. The dietetic sounds of her panting heavily let audiences know she is in a panicked state.
The fast paced non-diegetic soundtrack as Maddie dashes to the door increases the tension as audiences can see the sense of urgency on her face. This confrontation between the two is significant because we still do not know the identity of the killer as he is wearing a mask; it links with the home invasion sub-genre of horror as well as being a major element of the story line as audiences must wait to discover who he is and what he wants.
